Three candidates are facing off in the Democratic primary for state senator in the 23rd District. One of the candidates is former state Sen. Ernie Newton, who's trying to get his seat back after serving time for corruption.
"Redemption and opportunity has resonated with the city," said Newton. The former state senator relinquished his seat in 2005 after pleading guilty to corruption. He was released from prison in 2010.
The other two candidates in today's primary are incumbent state Sen. Ed Gomes and Andres Ayala.
