Friends are remembering a pregnant Bridgeport woman who died in a weekend car crash in Shelton as a happy person.
The head-on crash happened around 7 p.m. Sunday on River Road near Murphys Lane. Briana Carter, 23, and her unborn child, Luna Rose, died in the crash. Carter's husband, Lawrence Carter, was driving the car and remains in critical condition.
News 12 met up Tuesday with Officer Margaret Farkas at Bridgeport police headquarters. Farkas was 23-year-old Briana Carter's roommate for a year and attended Bridgeport Central High School with her. She says Carter was studying to become a nurse.
"She tried to look at things the positive way," Farkas says. "She was, like, a great girl."
"She loved helping people," says Tiffany Killy, another high school friend of Carter's. "It's what she was about...her heart was gold. She helped everybody."
Carter's funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning at Funeraria Luz de Paz in Bridgeport. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the costs.
Carter is survived by her 4-year-old son, Cameron.
Army Pvt. Shalymar Herrera, 18, was also in the car and died. She attended Bridgeport Military Academy and was a member of the Stratford Eagles Air Patrol. Col. James Ridley, of the Connecticut Wing Civil Air Patrol, told News 12 by phone that Herrera was an exemplary cadet and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.
