Frustration continues to mount for tenants of the Betances Houses in Mott Haven over the closure of a community center and possible elimination of an after-school program.
Earlier this month, the New York City Housing Authority announced that the Betances Community Center, which was supposed to be getting a makeover, would be closing. According to the NYCHA, budget cuts and a $160 million deficit forced officials to close the center.
In mid-December, parents say they were also informed that the temporary after-school facility at a nearby school would also be eliminated after Dec. 23. They say they began scrambling to find places for their children when school begins after the break. However, parents say the NYCHA later informed them that the after-school program wasn?t ending, leaving them confused and frustrated.
Those in the community say they will fight to reopen the center and get to the bottom of the after-school program issue.
