? A number of Bridgeport?s West Side residents were evacuated Thursday night after police say a construction crew accidentally struck a gas line, spraying fuel across the neighborhood.
The accident happened near the intersection of Fairfield Avenue and Ellsworth Street at around 8 p.m., forcing road closures and the evacuation of approximately 1,100 people in a two-block radius of the leak.
Firefighters sprayed water all over the site to reduce the risk of fire. Metro-North also stopped service in the area over concerns that sparks from a passing train might ignite the gas.
Police say Southern Connecticut Gas finally shut down the line at around 10 p.m. Officials say no one was hurt, and everything is back to normal Friday with the line repaired.
