Gov. Ned Lamont attended a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Stamford.
The celebration of the civil rights figure’s legacy was held at Bethel AME Church, located on 150 Fairfield Ave.
Gov. Lamont and Mayor Caroline Simmons both spoke about his impact on history at the event.
"He just reminded us; you don't always get to the mountain top. It’s a journey, and every day you’re looking for justice, you’re looking for that north star. I think that’s what this day is all about,” said Lamont.
Neighbors and local leaders then embarked on an annual march as they reflected on the civil rights hero’s words of wisdom.
"Light always trumps over dark. Love over hate,” said the Rev. Winton Hill.
Bobby Fisher, of Stamford, comes to the service every year, says it's an obligation and privilege to come to church in honor of Dr. King.
"He gave his life. He knew he was going to be taken out, and I'm not sure how many of us would walk that path knowing we were that much in danger. I think we owe it to him to at least represent, to come, out, and to keep the legacy going,” says Fisher.
