Gov. Ned Lamont says that the state hopes to conduct 42,000 tests a week as early as next week during his press conference Tuesday.
He says the number of positive coronavirus tests continues to be under 10% of all tests performed.
Lamont says that the state was conducting 18,000 tests a few weeks ago and is now conducting 29,000 tests weekly.
Officials say this will enable them to test more people in nursing homes and first responders, as well as both symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19 patients.
They also say hospitals now have space to start to do some elective surgeries.
Yale New Haven Health says it is doing 20% of the surgeries they used to do normally.
BRIEFING NOTES:
- There are 34,333 coronavirus cases in the state, with 568 new cases since Monday. There have also been 3,041 virus-related deaths, with 33 new deaths.
- There have been 1,189 coronavirus hospitalizations, with 23 people discharged since Monday. The state has conducted 138,424 coronavirus tests, with 5,916 tests conducted since Monday.
- Lamont says the state is currently testing 29,000 people a week, and that the number is expected to increase to 42,000 by next week.
- Lamont says the state has received its largest PPE shipment to date. The state has received 6 million surgical masks, 500,000 protective masks, 100,000 surgical gowns and 100,000 temporal thermometers.
- Officials from Yale-New Haven Hospital says the hospital will be ramping up to 5,000 tests a day due to a contract with the state. They say that they hope to increase to 10,000 tests a day by the end of June.
