Gov. Dannel Malloy on Tuesday announced that Metro-North riders will be able to once again purchase beer and wine while on their trips.
The governor says 10 of the "bar cars" are coming, and 50 additional regular cars will be put into service to help ease overcrowding.
The new cars will cost about $200 million. It comes as riders are likely facing a 5 percent fare hike.
"Unless we're going to substantially change how we pay for transportation and change how we subsidize transportation, we have to, from time to time, make adjustments," Malloy says.
A loan will pay for the new rail cars, but not the fare increase.
The state says a prototype bar car will not hit the tracks until 2018; the rest will gradually be put into service through 2021.
