The most severe penalty in the state for any future cases is life in prison without the possibility of release
The governor's action comes on the same day that a new poll shows most voters in Connecticut support the death penalty.
The Quinnipiac University poll shows 51 percent of voters disapprove of the recent bill to get rid of capital punishment.
Meanwhile, 62 percent of those polled say they favor the death penalty for convicted killers.
