Greenwich school officials closed the fields at a local middle school Thursday after state health officials found elevated levels of toxins in the soil.
As News 12 reported, officials conducted soil tests at Western Middle School and found high levels of toxins, including arsenic and lead.
They say the levels are higher than the criteria for residentially zoned areas, but not high enough to immediately report the findings or close the fields.
Officials say they closed the fields as a precautionary measure, and many residents say they support the move.
