Greenwich town officials on Wednesday responded to residents who are not happy that a multimillion-dollar plan to rebuild and expand New Lebanon Elementary School calls for more than 180 trees to be cut down.

At a Town Hall meeting lasting more than an hour, residents voiced their concerns ranging from environmental consequences to noise pollution due to the lack of a sound barrier from I-95. They also called the tree cutting unnecessary, and some were doubtful of the town's promise to replace removed trees.

Officials say they will be following town policy and replace every tree that is cut down, whether the tree is replanted on the New Lebanon site or elsewhere in town.

Officials say they will not move forward with cutting the trees until they get state approval reimbursing them for the cost of the project.
