Help may be on the way for southwestern Connecticut residents struggling to stay in their homes. The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) has had counselors at the Stamford Marriott since Saturday to help homeowners modify their mortgages. The organization says nearly 3,000 people have already come by to give their information.NACA's CEO says it can help homeowners get interest rates as low as 3 percent and can sometimes reduce the amount of the loan. He says it is possible because the organization has agreements with many major lenders.
Blaine Booker, a Norwalk resident who attended the Save the Dream workshop, says he hopes the NACA specialists are able to help him. He says his mortgage reset to an unaffordable monthly amount and he decided to get help before it was too late.
?I can read the writing on the wall,? Booker says. ?I don't want to wait until I'm going through the foreclosure process.?
Anyone who restructures their mortgage through NACA is required to take part in advocacy activities for the life of the loan. The organization also led people to protest at local homes of bank CEOs, claiming they are to blame for the millions of foreclosures across the country.
