Guide: How to report antisemitic incidents in the tri-state area

The U.S. State Department defines antisemitic criminal acts as when the targets of an attack, whether they are people or property, are selected because they are, or are perceived to be, Jewish or linked to Jews.

The Anti-Defamation League says there were 3,697 antisemitic incidents in the U.S. in 2022, which was a 36% increase from 2021. It is also the highest number on record since the ADL began tracking these incidents in 1979.

The ADL found that antisemitic incidents happened in all 50 states, with New York recording the most at 580. New Jersey was also near the top of the list, with 408 incidents. Connecticut had 68 in 2022, which was a 100% increase from 2021.

If you or someone you know was the victim of an antisemitic incident, here are some resources on how to report your case.

NATIONAL

Officials and police departments urge you to call 911 for a hate crime in progress and if you are in danger.

The nonprofit Combined Jewish Philanthropies has key tips on what to do if you experience antisemitism. These include informing law enforcement, documenting the incident, preserving evidence and reporting the incident to the ADL.

You can report an antisemitic incident you've experienced or witnessed on the ADL’s website.

The U.S. Holocaust Museum has an online guide on how to recognize antisemitism and the different types of antisemitic incidents.

Hate crimes can also be reported to the FBI by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI, or by submitting a tip to tips.fbi.gov.

CONNECTICUT

The Connecticut Hate Crimes Advisory Council has a list of state resources for those who have experienced hate crimes.

You can contact the Hate Crimes Investigative Unit of the Connecticut State Police at hate.crimes@ct.gov.

The Connecticut Regional Office of the ADL has more information on antisemitic incidents in the state and local events you can get involved in to combat discrimination.

NEW JERSEY

People who were targets of bias crimes can contact the New Jersey Report Bias Crime Hotline at 1-800-277-BIAS.

Victims can also file complaints online through the New Jersey Bias Investigation Access System or by calling 1-833-NJDCR4U.

The NJ Division of Criminal Justice’s Bias Crime Unit can be contacted at 609-984-6500. The New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice has tips on reporting bias crimes here.

NEW YORK

To file a complaint or report a tip to the New York State Hate Crimes Task Force, call 1-888-392-3644, or text "HATE" to 81336. You can also file a complaint online.

The New York state website has an online anti-hate crime resource guide.

ADL New York/New Jersey has information on the latest local efforts to combat antisemitism. You can contact them for non-emergencies at 212-885-7970, or by emailing newyork@adl.org.

NEW YORK CITY:

You can contact the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force at 1-888-440-HATE or by emailing hctf@nypd.org.

The NYPD has tips on reporting hate crimes and bias incidents in the city here.
