Concerned customers of Connecticut Light & Power came to Stamford for a hearing over whether the power company should be allowed to raise rates.

The proposed rate increase would be an average of approximately $150 per resident, with the biggest part of the increase being part of the monthly surcharge.

Residents say the company is asking for too much money.

The spokesperson for Connecticut Light & Power says the utility needs the money to help maintain the reliability of electric lines.

The State Office of Consumer Counsel opposes the rate hike request because most of it would come from raising the monthly surcharge, which is 59 percent for residential customers. The customers would be unable to lower it by conserving energy.

Officials say a rate increase would go into effect in December if approved.
