A highly contagious stomach virus is circulating through schools in the Bronx, keeping many children home in bed.
According to doctors, like Dr. Nonato of the Soundview Health Clinic, there are a few steps parents and children can take to prevent catching the stomach bug. Nonato says the most important line of defense against spreading germs is frequent hand washing. Doctors also recommend staying home from work or school when sick to prevent spreading germs and to get rest.
For children and adults already exhibiting symptoms, like stomach aches and fevers, doctors recommend eating bananas, apples and rice, which have binding qualities to help stop diarrhea. It is also crucial to drink plenty of water and other fluids to keep hydrated, doctors say.
