Hunts Point Terminal Market workers asking for a new contract are pushing back their plans to strike at the request of a federal mediator.

Members of the Teamsters Local 202 union say that when they asked for a $25 weekly raise, they were rejected. Their employers instead offered $16 more a week.

Workers say they are not asking for too much because the market brings in almost $2.5 billion in revenue each year.

Hunts Point Terminal Market officials say there are contingencies in place to make sure that the market stays open if an agreement is not reached by 4 p.m. Sunday, which is when more than 1,300 employees plan to walk off the job. The workers were originally planning to strike just after midnight on Friday.

Business owners in the area who rely on the produce every day say they are worried. Many stores and restaurants across the city and beyond could see that same impact considering the market is the biggest fresh produce supplier in the area.
