A New Milford woman who lost her only son, a Navy Seal, in Iraq, is honoring other veterans through him.
Jason D. Lewis, 30, was killed in active duty by a roadside bomb in 2007. He left behind a wife and three children.
His mother, Jean Mariano, goes to Center Cemetery in New Milford quite often to visit him.
"I wouldn't change being his mother. The ride was incredible," she says. "He was an awesome son. He loved so much."
Mariano has placed a wreath on his grave at Christmas time every year, but she realized how many other veterans buried were being forgotten.
She joined Wreaths Across America to make sure all of these veterans are recognized along with her son.
Next month, she will join many others, as she has in years past, to lay 700 Christmas wreaths on every veteran's grave and to remember the missing part of her life that, in the end, allowed her to honor so many more.
Each wreath costs $15. More information on how to help Mariano can be found here.
