In the aftermath of Monday’s storms, News 12 is hearing stories of roads turning into rivers and neighbors rescuing strangers trapped in cars. One of those areas is Grove Street in North Plainfield.
It was there that Morristown resident Camille Allen was stranded and floating in her Mercedes.
She explained that as she lifted her head from her sunroof, three men were making their way over and pulled her from her car to safety.
At the time, Grove Street was looking like a roaring river with waist-deep water.
Allen says she felt the water creeping up her leg when the three men found her.
“It was very traumatic, but I tried to stay calm, but you feel the water coming up,” said Allen.
Allen said that she did not know where the men who helped rescue her came from.
“By the time they got to me…the water was waist deep. They got me out of the car and then I was underneath that awning,” she said.
All along Grove Street, cars were being swamped by rainwater that caused the nearby Stony Brook to flood.
Not far away, in Plainfield, streets were also flooding as 6 inches of rain fell in 2 1/2 hours.
Plainfield officials have confirmed that two women died when trapped in their car in high water. That car was swept away into Cedar Brook. The names of the victims of the flooding in Plainfield have not been released.
It’s the second time this month that lives have been lost in Plainfield due to storms.
