Volunteers with We Care Blankets joined state Sen. Steven Rhoads to launch a monthlong yarn and blanket drive, at the Merrick Public Library Wednesday night.
The goal of the yarn and blanket drive is to get warm blankets to children undergoing cancer treatment, something We Care Blankets has been doing for 25 years.
“This initiative goes beyond just providing physical blankets for children. It’s a symbol of love and care, showing them they are not alone in their battle against cancer," explained Rhoads, who serves the 5th District in Nassau.
Long Islanders are encouraged to help in one of two ways -- by dropping off yarn at one of the twelve drop-off locations or by making a 36 inch by 36 inch blanket yourself and dropping that off.
Blankets must be made of acrylic yarn, fringe free and 100% washable to ensure that blankets are safe and easy for hospitals and families to maintain.
Brighter colored blankets are encouraged to bring a sense of joy to each child.
