A community activist in Bridgeport says that police have had cases similar to Black NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace's, who found a noose in his garage at Talledega Sunday night.
It happened less than two weeks after Wallace asked NASCAR to ban Confederate flags at all its tracks.
Wayne Winston says the incident is completely inappropriate.
"That hangman's noose has changed the fabric of this country, and it’s held Black men, in particular, hostage," he says.
Winston says in 2007, a Bridgeport police officer found a noose underneath a patrol car. He says Wilbur Chapman, the city's first Black police chief, even faced serious threats. Chapman was sworn in 20 years ago.
Winston says with the recent heightened awareness of racism, these threats should be stopped.
The FBI says there is no place in society for these types of actions.
Wallace released a statement saying, "The despicable act of racism and hatred leaves me incredibly saddened and serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism. Over the last several weeks, I have been overwhelmed by the support from people across the NASCAR industry, including other drivers and team members in the garage."
