A Long Island mom who already donated a kidney to her son is now being forced to search for a new one, because the one she donated is failing.
Mary Delay, of Long Beach, says her 31-year-old son Patrick, a chef, is currently undergoing dialysis three times a week while he waits for a new kidney.
Mary donated hers to him in 2009, but it has been failing since last year. She says she won't stop until a donor is found for her son. She's even taken the time to hand out flyers on the street.
"People have been gracious about posting them, not everybody, but I get it," says Mary Delay. "I've gotten some calls. You know I put my phone number on it just because I have been a donor, so I know what is involved here."
Patrick says his mom taught him there's no reason to dwell on the negatives.
"She's wonderful, I mean this wouldn't be as easy as it is without her support by an means," says Patrick.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, 90,000 people in the United States are currently on the national transplant waiting list for a donor kidney.
