Who said Long Island wasn’t a hotbed for football talent?
Far from the heavily recruited areas of Florida, California and Texas, the 118-milelong gem has produced one Division I recruit after another in recent years. In the last three weeks, the storylines have been plentiful:
- In late November, East Islip’s Rob Calabrese almost achieved his NFL dream. The second-year offensive quality control coach for the Broncos found himself in a unique position as a possible COVID-19 replacement quarterback, but the league foiled the team’s request.
- On Dec. 16, the Eagles promoted Newfield alum and safety Elijah Riley from the practice squad to the active roster.
- During this year’s Army-Navy football game, the Midshipmen were led by Shoreham-Wading River star and freshman Xavier Arline.
- Ethan Wiederkehr, another Shoreham-Wading River product, has started six of seven games for Northwestern this season, including most recently the Big Ten championship against Ohio State.
- In that same Big Ten title game was Lindenhurst’s Jeremy Ruckert playing tight end for the Buckeyes. He now has his sight set on the College Football Playoff as Ohio State will play Clemson in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.
- Sticking with Lindenhurst talent, Olasunkonmi Agunloye made his second career appearance on the defensive line for Virginia when the Cavaliers played Boston College on Dec. 5.
- Michigan true freshman Dan Villari from Plainedge hasn’t played yet this season, but his name has circulated in recent weeks as a possible starter for the Wolverines.
- Sayville’s Jack Coan opted to enter the transfer portal and leave Wisconsin after he lost his starting quarterback position due to an injury-filled season. He leaves Madison with a school record 236 completions in 2019.
