The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will host its annual stair climbing tribute for fallen FDNY firefighters who died on 9/11 later this month at the Billy Jean King Tennis Stadium in Queens.
The fundraiser on Oct. 20 supports counseling and other services for families and of fallen firefighters. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has hosted the event since 2015.
Massapequa resident Joan York's husband, Raymond, died during the rescue efforts. She participates in the event each year to remember those who lost their lives.
"I think it's important that we don't forget that day and honor the men and women who died," explained York.
Since 9/11, the number of FDNY members who have died due to 9/11-related illnesses has surpassed the 343 firefighters who perished in the World Trade Center attacks.
"We lose about three to four members a month who are retired and other first responders dying of 9/11-related illness," explained Tom Richardson of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
