Bridgeport city and education officials today unveiled a plan to demolish and rebuild Longfellow School. Bridgeport School Superintendent Paul Vallas and Mayor Bill Finch say the school, located on Ocean Terrace, would be completely razed at a cost of around $50 million. They say state lawmakers recently approved the project's budget. Officials say they originally planned to renovate the building, but decided to tear it down amid concerns over contaminated soil and asbestos poisoning. Some parents say they agree with the move, but are worried about where their children will be educated. Vallas says students will be temporarily sent to at least two nearby schools. A public meeting is scheduled for May 30 to discuss the plan.
