A Hartford man is facing charges for allegedly lying to Darien police about evidence related to the unsolved shooting death of a police officer more than 30 years ago.

Investigators say Jeffrey Romanchuck, 50, contacted police claiming to have an audio recording of a man bragging about the death of Officer Kenneth Bateman.

The officer was shot to death outside the Duchess on the Post Road in 1981.

Police say Romanchuck admitted to making the recording up after several interviews. They say he had previously supplied false information in the case and that it is unclear what Romanchuck's motive was for lying.
