A man convicted of fatally hitting a teenage high school student with his car as she attempted to cross the road in Stamford has been spared prison time.
A judge handed down a suspended sentence plus probation Tuesday to 40-year-old Wilson Cabrera.
Cabrera was convicted of negligence in the 2016 death of 18-year-old Karina Tinajero.
Police say Tinajero was standing on a double yellow line and tried to cross Strawberry Hill Avenue to get to the school when she was struck by Cabrera's car.
The tragedy prompted the city to install a crosswalk at the intersection and make other safety improvements for students going to the school.
