A man whose kayak sank in the Long Island Sound is back on dry land in Greenwich.

Officials say a call came in around 11 a.m. Sunday about a man holding on to a large rock in the Sound. They say the man was kayaking with a friend when a wave capsized the kayak, forcing him to Red Rock for safety.

Police say he had a life jacket on and was able to get to the rock and hold on until help arrived. They say the water was too shallow for rescue boats, so another kayaker paddled out, let the man get on and then took him to the rescue boats.

Police say kayakers should always wear a life jacket, never go out on the water at night and carry a waterproof radio or cellphone. They also advise larger boats to watch their wake and take it slower.
