Milford police say a man is lucky to be alive after he was trapped in a car fire over the weekend.

Police say the driver of a Subaru Outback lost control of the car on West River Street Sunday night and hit a tree before the car caught on fire.
Mark Bernier from Milford and Jake Tyman from Fairfield stopped to get the victim out of the car.

"As we pulled him out, the flames were just under the hood and in the engine area and we were approaching from the driver's door, so no danger there," Bernier said.

The victim was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital with an injured pelvis and is expected to make a full recovery.
Police are investigating the crash.
