Mayor Bill de Blasio says he would veto a proposed City Council bill that would make chokeholds illegal.
A spokesperson for the mayor said that de Blasio thinks the NYPD internal policy is the best way to regulate the practice. Chokeholds are banned by the police department.
The bill is being reviewed in the wake of the Eric Garner case. The medical examiner said a police chokehold contributed to his death.
The mayor's opposition to the legislation could be viewed as an attempt to smooth over tensions with police union leaders, who are also against the bill.
