Officials in Easton held a public hearing tonight on a controversial construction plan for a cell phone tower near a school.

The proposal calls for a 130-foot cell phone tower to be built near Samuel Staples Elementary School. Some parents say they're concerned about the health dangers associated with the structure.

First Selectman Tom Herrmann says the Federal Communications Commission has told the town there is no conclusive evidence of radiation risks. The town currently has two towers, neither of which provides coverage to the southern neighborhoods where the school is located.

Easton's planning and zoning commission has approximately one month to file a letter of recommendation for or against the tower. If they decide to build it, work may not begin for another 18 months.
