Workers across southwestern Connecticut may not be in line for a pay raise as state lawmakers struggle to pass a minimum wage increase. The bill has already made it through the House, but does not appear to have as much support in the Senate. The legislation would raise the current rate of $8.25 per hour to $8.75 by January 2014. Workers who rely on minimum wage say a 50-cent raise sounds minimal, but will at least help them take care of basic necessities. The House Speaker's Office says 106,000 residents in Connecticut earn minimum wage and that they would each make an extra $1,000 under the new proposal.
