A house fire broke out early Wednesday morning along Sturges Road near Mill Plain Green before being quickly brought under control in Fairfield.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene around 8:20 a.m., officials said.

Upon arrival, Fairfield firefighters were able to extinguish the flames in approximately 15 minutes.

The Bridgeport Fire Department was called in to provide mutual aid as crews worked to put out the fire.

Fairfield officials said firefighters remained on the scene to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.

The home sustained fire, smoke and heat damage on all floors and is currently in an unlivable state.

No occupants were inside the home during the fire, although, firefighters located a cat, which was safely removed from the residence and turned over to Animal Control for evaluation and care.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury when a stairwell collapsed while moving to a higher floor.

The firefighter was treated by medical staff on the scene.

The fire department added that residents should ensure that working smoke alarms are installed within all floors of their homes.
