A Nassau police officer was hospitalized after a vehicle slammed into his cruiser in Seaford Friday morning.

The crash happened on Sunrise Highway around 5:45 a.m. when the officer was helping a disabled motorist in the westbound lanes. That's when police say a black pickup truck slammed into the back of the 7th Precinct patrol SUV.

Acting Nassau County Police Commissioner Pat Ryder tells News 12 the officer, who is a 23-year veteran of the force, is expected to be OK.

According to police, the officer was ending his night shift when he pulled up behind the disabled motorist to help.

The commissioner tells News 12 the officer is in the Air Force reserves. He says the first words out of his mouth in the hospital was that he had to be OK, because he's being deployed in two weeks.

“That is a credit to the type of officers we hire in this county. He is an outstanding police officer,” said Ryder.

Police say no criminality was involved in the incident.
