Some neighbors in Fairfield are opposing the transformation of a former Masonic temple to a 40-unit apartment complex on Beach Road.
Developer Love Where You Live Homes is planning to build the six-story complex at 131 Beach Road, on the edge of the town's historical district.
State Rep. Brian Farnen says he wants to see development, but something that matches the historic nature of the community.
He says under normal circumstances, town zoning rules wouldn't allow it.
Neighbors say they're concerned about increased traffic in the area, but the state statutes bar Planning and Zoning from denying the proposal unless it can show a threat to public health and safety.
Opponents say they're all for more housing in the neighborhood but would like to see a more modest proposal.
First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick says she's been working to get the town more affordable housing that doesn't break the zoning rules.
She says she's not surprised to hear opposition to the new development.
Fairfield Planning and Zoning will hold a public hearing via Zoom Tuesday evening. News 12 reached out to the developer for comment.
