The storm that swept across the five boroughs took out the power to tens of thousands of people at one point – including the elevators at Hope Gardens. This meant that many of the senior citizens who live in the building were stranded.
Riseboro, which provides meals at the senior center, partnered with elected officials and volunteers in the neighborhood to walk up meals and deliver them directly to those senior citizens who weren’t able to leave their homes to pick them up.
Some of these buildings are 14 floors tall, meaning lots of walking for the volunteers.
One of the two broken elevators in question has been repaired, with the other elevator expected to be fully operational tonight.
