A street in the Highbridge area has been renamed to honor a prominent local pastor.
Church members say the late Pastor Wenzell P. Jackson was an instrumental part of their community. The California native and Bronx resident died in 2012 after a heart attack.
To preserve his legacy, clergy members, family, friends and elected officials gathered for a ceremony that renamed a street in his honor. Nelson Avenue was unveiled as Bishop Wenzell P. Jackson Place.
In addition to his religious and charitable work, city officials say Jackson was dedicated to education and was especially involved with building the Highbridge Green School.
Church members in the community say that whenever they look up at the new sign, they will know Pastor Jackson is looking down on them.
