? Firefighters in New Canaan say a weekend fire that leveled a home highlights the importance of getting more hydrants in the town.
Firefighters who arrived on the scene of the Saturday fire say they needed to call on six other departments to battle the flames because the nearest hydrant was almost a mile away. In addition, they say they didn?t have enough tankers to bring water to the scene.
Fred Baker, the New Canaan fire marshal, says the fire department has been pushing for the money to install a 15,000-gallon underground water tank on Wellesley Drive that would have been helpful over the weekend.
Baker also says they?d like to see more funding for more dry hydrants, which use water from ponds or pools, around the town. Currently, New Canaan has eight. Only 30 percent of the town is covered by fire hydrants connected to public water supplies.
?Everyone's awareness is heightened now because of the fire and we're going to take advantage of that,? Baker says.
No one was injured in the West Road fire over the weekend.
The town board?s next meeting is in early December. Baker says he hopes funding for the tank will be approved and that he?s mapping out locations where dry hydrants would be beneficial.
