Some New Canaan residents say irresponsible dog owners are making a mess of town parks.
The town has a carry in/carry out policy for trash, which led to fewer trash cans at Waveny Park and other town parks. The policy means that people walking their dogs need to carry their garbage to the dumpster in the parking lot after cleaning up.
"It's not convenient for them to carry it to the dumpster, so they just nonchalantly dump it on the side of the trail wherever they think might be convenient," says Recreation Director Stephen Benko. "Unfortunately, one person does it and then the next person does it and then it just snowballs."
News 12 is told there is a town ordinance saying people have to pick up after their pets and properly dispose of it, but unless they're caught in the act, officials say it can be difficult to enforce.
New Canaan officials say more signs will being going up in town parks reminding people to clean up after their pets.
