Teamsters Local 25 Union and Stop & Shop announced they have reached a tentative agreement, which includes a six-year contract for over 900 employees at the grocery chain's Massachusetts distribution center.
Union leaders say the agreement guarantees that the facility will remain open and they also secured the largest wage increase in workers' history and strengthen benefits.
In a statement, Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien said, "today (Friday) our membership at Stop & Shop achieved the strongest contract in the supermarket industry. We are proud of our members' solidarity and commitment to remain united throughout negotiations."
Union leaders had accused the company of threatening to strip workers of their union health care who work at the distribution center.
Had an agreement not been reached, Stop & Shop would have shut down the center, which would have immediately impacted Connecticut shoppers.
