New Haven honored Black Lives Matter through art Saturday.
The first in a series of Black Lives Matter street murals was painted on Bassett Street between Dixwell Avenue and Watson Street.
Saturday's painting also featured vendors and open mic performances.
Shirley Lawrence, who lives on Bassett Street, says she is inspired by the mural.
"There's not enough words that can describe the feeling of every day coming out of my door and seeing this," she says. "It's a just a reminder that the struggle is alive and its real, and it's going to continue to give me the energy to keep on pushing forward for social justice and economic justice for all of us."
The project is sponsored by the city and its Department of Arts and Cultural Affairs, Black Lives Matter New Haven, community groups and private donors.
