Police are searching for three gunmen after a Morrisania man was shot and killed inside his apartment building early in the morning March 6.
Investigators say the shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. inside 765 East 165th St. at the Forest Houses in Morrisania.
According to police, 27-year-old Jayvontae Simmons was found unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head. First responders rushed him to Lincoln Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Newly obtained doorbell video appears to capture the moments leading up to the shooting. In the footage, two masked men can be seen running toward Simmons inside the building. One of the suspects appears to pistol-whip him while the other tries to rob him, as Simmons struggles to fight them off.
Gunshots can then be heard. Police quickly locked down the NYCHA building as detectives searched for evidence.
Neighbors watched from behind police tape as investigators carried brown paper evidence bags out of the building.
One of the items recovered was Simmons’ cellphone, which flew across the room during the struggle.
While the video shows two masked suspects, the NYPD says they are searching for three people believed to be involved in the deadly attack.
