News 12 Sports Mailbag: Grading the 2020 drafts for the Giants, Jets and Pats
The 2020 NFL Draft has come and gone with a very different feel to it, as Commissioner Roger Goodell delivered the picks from his basement and soon-to-be players reacted from their homes. News 12’s Fred Gerteiny breaks down his thoughts on the picks – do you agree with him?
Grade each team’s entire draft – break down what you liked/didn’t like
Giants: B ... GM Dave Gettleman is on the hot seat and he needed to score with this year’s selections. His top pick, OL Andrew Thomas, was a solid pick, his size and durability in a position of weakness for Big Blue is a good one.
I thought his second round pick may have been even better “stealing” Alabama safety Xavier McKinney. He’s the best pure safety in the draft and will fit nicely alongside Jabrill Peppers.
In the third round, I love this pick, I covered UConn’s Matt Peart, he’s is a HUGE offensive lineman at 6’7", 318 lbs., adding another “HOG MOLLIE” up front, AND he’s a terrific kid. The ‘sleeper’ pick is UCLA CB Darnay Holmes, surprised he slipped to round No. 4.
Jets: B ... Joe Douglas did a terrific job in his first draft as Gang Green’s GM. As a former offensive lineman, he went for Louisville’s massive tackle Mekhi Becton with the 11th overall pick - at 6’7", 364 lbs., he’ll become Sam Darnold’s great protector.
His second round pick was a tad curious, taking Cal safety Ashtyn Davis, a position of strength on the team. But he went best player available and Davis is a solid player.
He made another curious pick in round No. 6 taking a punter out of Texas A&M Braden Mann, BUT he’s really good and special teams are so underrated.
Patriots: C ... Bill Belichick didn’t address his biggest need, a replacement for legendary quarterback Tom Brady.
They made several trades moving back accumulating picks, which is good, but his first pick wasn’t until the second round at pick No. 37 and it was interesting, to say the least.
Safety Kyle Duggar out of Lenoir-Rhyne. Kyle who? And he took a kicker in Round No. 5 from Marshall. Don’t get it. I will say this,  I love Afernee Jennings the linebacker from Alabama in round 3. GREAT player!
