Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with dozens of content creators Tuesday afternoon, hosting what his team called a first-of-its-kind “new media conference” aimed at discussing his affordability agenda directly through social media platforms.
The invite-only event brought roughly 70 micro-influencers to City Hall for a Town Hall-style discussion, with participants using their platforms to raise questions and concerns.
“There are so many New Yorkers for whom social media is the medium through which they understand not just their lives, but the struggles of their lives,” Mamdani said.
The mayor even posted a selfie from the meeting to Instagram, highlighting what he described as a deliberate shift in how his administration communicates with the public.
It was a presser without the press, because Mamdani says social media offers a direct line to communities often left out of traditional political spaces.
The mayor's office says among the dozens of content creators are teachers and health care workers, who Mamdani says, reach New Yorkers where they are on social media.
“We will meet here as well," Mamdani said, referring to the press core. "But it's important to also take this message out to New York City, as well as bring the rest of New York City into this same building.”
Before Mamdani took office, he held a similar meeting with influencers about a week before Election Day. Some attendees included:
- Christian Divyne, a comedian from Brooklyn with 737,700 followers on TikTok
- Reggie, a Brooklyn comedian and rapper with 26,500 followers on TikTok
- Cassie Wilson, the first influencer to make a social media video with the mayor in 2024. She has 334,000 followers on TikTok
- Malik, a NYC comedian with 89,800 followers on TikTok
- Tina, an influencer with 674,600 followers on TikTok
News 12 requested a full list of content creators who participated but did not receive one. About 70 other influencers attended the first meeting. However, their names were not immediately available. Of the five influencers News 12 were able to find, all appear to be pro Mamdani.
The mayor said this Town Hall-style meeting is the first of many.
