News of a Bridgeport eighth-grader bringing a gun to school Tuesday has left some parents fearing for the safety of their children.
Officials at the Cesar Battala School say security guards found the .38-caliber gun after searching the student's bag. According the school principal, a security officer noticed the student carrying a suspicious bag at around 2 p.m. Tuesday. The school says the gun was inoperable, rusted and unloaded.
Still, the director of school security says the city is considering installing metal detectors in some of Bridgeport's middle schools, and the mayor asserts a zero tolerance gun policy will be strictly enforced.
The school says its police are investigating the incident and that the student has been suspended. No one was hurt in the incident, but parents say more needs to be done to protect their children.
