Changes are on the horizon for Liberty State Park in Jersey City.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection hosted an open house at the Liberty Science Center to showcase the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program.
This is the fifth open house the DEP has hosted. According to the DEP, the program will “bring more than 100 acres of active recreational, arts, and cultural improvements to Liberty State Park’s perimeter and create a central park at its heart with world-class natural landscapes that build resilience to flooding and climate change while providing passive recreation and educational opportunities for the public.”
The public was able to share their opinions on the plans, which included improvements along the Audrey Zapp Drive Corridor and the cleanup and restoration of the contaminated section of the park.
"There's been waves of trying to privatize it with all kinds of crazy, not good ideas for the whole time and I've been involved in trying to speak out against those – keep the idea that a park is for people to enjoy," said Karen Rogoff, who has lived in Jersey City for 36 years.
"This is a beautiful place…This is our place to breathe," said Jersey City resident Gail Waltz.
The first phase of the project along the Audrey Zapp Drive Corridor is set to break ground this year. The entire master plan will take years to complete.
