Mark Schlegel, 73, of Norwalk, has pancreatic cancer, which is generally considered to be the deadliest of cancers.

"It's been a long and difficult battle -- but something good is coming out of it," Schlegel told News 12.

He's referring to the eighth annual Rallye for Pancreatic cancer -- a car show he and his wife started through their nonprofit, Rallye for Pancreatic Cancer Inc.

"All of the money we raised goes to research," he said.

Though his battle continues, Schlegel is a 10-year survivor of pancreatic cancer, making him one of the few patients on record ever to have kept the illness at bay for more than a decade, his doctors say.

"I want to use my energy to support research -- and hopefully to help other people battling pancreatic cancer down the road," he said.
