Bridgeport's mayor says the city ended the 2016 fiscal year with a $600,000 surplus.

The city faced a $20 million deficit when Joseph Ganim took office last December.

Officials say they've had to make some difficult decisions this year.

They say two rounds of layoffs within the city government and a freeze on spending also contributed to improving the city's financial situation.
