One day after Sgt. Marlon Campo, of the Bridgeport Police Department, was placed on paid administrative leave, City Council President Aidee Nieves spoke about the matter.
"I received an anonymous email last week saying Sgt. Campo was having a relationship with a recruit. I immediately alerted City Attorney Tyisha S. Toms, who informed me she was already aware of the situation and that an investigation was already underway," Nieves told News 12.
The police department - saying it never discusses personnel matters - offered no details about the investigation.
City Councilwoman Jazmarie Melendez said the administrative action points to the need for more transparency on the part of the Bridgeport Police Department, saying the Bridgeport Police Commission - which handles disciplinary actions - should be more directly accountable to the public.
"What we would need is for the Bridgeport Police Commission to be acting as a civilian review board, which New Haven has and other municipalities have, where community members are part of a board and part of a process when moments like this occur, so they could have more authority to investigate," Melendez said.
Councilman Jorge Cruz said he was sorry to learn that Sgt. Campo is under investigation.
"My constituents love this guy. That's how good he is, that's how good he comes across to the public - so it's sad to hear what's going on and I hope and pray that he's alright, that his family's alright; and I pray
that Police Chief Roderick Porter will get to the bottom of everything," Cruz said.
Campo did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
