A major hotel deal announced Monday means that hundreds of jobs in Stamford are in jeopardy.
Marriott Hotels announced it will buy Starwood Hotels for $12 billion, creating the world's biggest hotel company.
The buyout could significantly impact the headquarters of Starwood Hotels in Stamford and the hundreds of Connecticut-based employees of the company.
Gov. Dannel Malloy arrived in Stamford Monday with positive news. He says 400 new jobs were created at Conair. The news was overshadowed by the takeover.
Both Malloy and Stamford Mayor David Martin said they learned of the deal Monday and that they haven't spoken to Marriott officials.
Back in 2009, Malloy lobbied for $85 million in state incentives to expand Starwood's headquarters. Last year, he got another $25 million in exchange for hundreds of extra jobs.
Malloy and Martin say they are hoping to keep those jobs and the headquarters in the city of Stamford.
Starwood Hotels owns luxury hotel chains like Sheraton and the W.
A Marriott spokeswoman says the new company will be based in Maryland, but no decision has been made about the Stamford office and the hundreds of employees who work there.
