State officials and university researchers released a new report card about the health of the Long Island Sound.

Federal and state environmental officials were joined by Sen. Richard Blumenthal to discuss the findings at Sherwood Island State Park.

The report says it is safer to swim in the Sound than it has been in decades, but it also says there is plenty of work left to do. It states that Norwalk marks the point where the Sound starts becoming dirtier, although the water there is considered safe for swimming.

The Long Island Sound report card gives the beaches below Norwalk a D- for water quality and the beaches from Westport up to the Connecticut River a B or B-. The waters around New York City scored an F.

Connecticut is expected to unveil a 20-year plan for the Long Island Sound this summer.
