Officials: Smoke detectors helped saved 12 people in Stamford fire
Fire officials in Stamford are crediting smoke detectors with saving the lives of 12 people after a fire broke out at their apartment building.
It happened Wednesday at a two-family apartment on Seaside Avenue.
According to officials, due to the working smoke detectors, everyone made it out safely before crews arrived.
Officials say one child was taken to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation, but things could have been a whole lot worse if the smoke alarms weren't working.
When crews arrived, the fire was coming out of the second floor bedroom. Officials say the fire didn't spread past the second floor, but there's smoke and water damage throughout the building.
As a result, the 12 people have been displaced. Due to the high temperatures, officials say they needed to bring in extra firefighters to rotate out the crews.
They say Wednesday’s fire was just another example of how important working smoke detectors are.
Half of the people displaced are staying with family, while the Red Cross is helping the other half.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
